Teaser Tuesday: Mortal Gods

teasertuesdays2014e

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

Mortal godsThis is from Kendare Blake’s Mortal Gods, the second in her Goddess Wars series. Athena is talking about Cassandra, the young girl who is the god killer (review of book 1 here).

“Don’t get excited,” Athena muttered. I’m not going to drag her out into the middle of nowhere so she can take care of you. She’s a god killer not a god euthanizer.”

This pretty much describes what this book is about, and it’s overly dramatic, but Blake is so good at what she does because along with the drama, there’s the pain and tragedy of the story. It’s good. So good.

This is the one that I hate though.

“I just want him back, Ody. There has to be a way, doesn’t there? There has to be a way to go and bring him back.

Odyssesu hugged her and rested his chin on her head.

“I don’t know. But if you find a way, I’ll be there. Right to the end of the earth and over it.”

Sadly I think this foreshadows Blake bringing back Cassandra’s love interest, killed in the first book. Don’t worry, I’m not spoiling the best part about it — but, his death changed Cassandra, and set her on a journey to figure out how to wield this power and how to fight this war. Given there are some other references that make me think the love interest, Aidan, will be brought back to life at some point and it seems like all her growth and change will be for nothing, you know?

I hope I’m wrong though.

No way. I didn’t even know Kendare Blake came out with another book since her Girl of Nightmares series. Now, I’m going to have look into this one. Those teasers you posted are making me antsy. Thanks for sharing Verushka!

My pleasure, Mathilda! (I hope it’s everything you hope for when you get started, I’ve progressed further in my reading and I’m pretty sad at how things turned out).

And of course, heading over to your journal now!

Oh laura, I was, but then I read further today. I live in hope the author might rescue this before the end, but I’m preparing myself to be disappointed :(

Although this probably isn’t a book I’d read, the characters definitely sound interesting. Glad you’re enjoying it!

Thanks Sandra (I was when I posted, but I read more today and would have thrown a book down in frustration if i wasn’t reading it on my phone lol)

      - Hi first time visitor! Love the feel to your blog :)

      – I’m wondering if the narrative revolves around Greek mythology? I couldn’t help but wonder because of the name Athena :)

      • Verushka says:

Claudia, hello! Yes it does, and Blake does some excellent worldbuilding, AND manages to make the Gods straddle the line between their Godliness and humanity. In some regards this is a wonderful read, in others, it made me want to scream in frustration!
