The Sad Ghost Club: reminds you that you’re not alone

What is this about?

Sam (or rather SG) is having a bad day; a day when the anxious thoughts in his head are out of control and he feels alone — and those thoughts are consuming him.

What else is this about?

This is a sweet comic and a reminder that if you are feeling alone and anxious, you’re not alone.

Ever felt anxious or alone? Like you don’t belong anywhere? Like you’re almost… invisible? Find your kindred spirits at The Sad Ghost Club.

(You are not alone. Shhh. Pass it on.) This is the story of one of those days – a day so bad you can barely get out of bed, when it’s a struggle to leave the house, and when you do, you wish you hadn’t. But even the worst of days can surprise you. When one sad ghost, alone at a crowded party, spies another sad ghost across the room, they decide to leave together. What happens next changes everything.

Because that night they start the The Sad Ghost Club – a secret society for the anxious and alone, a club for people who think they don’t belong.

Stunningly illustrated, this is volume 1 in a new graphic novel series, for fans of Heartstopper and Jennifer Niven, and for anyone who’s ever felt invisible.

The Sad Ghost Club is such a wonderful, thoughtful comic.

It begins with Sam being unable to sleep, and then his (anxious) thoughts taking control of his mind in the middle of the night. From there, his anxious thoughts escalate, even when he receives an invite to a party.

His anxious thoughts consume him, as he worries about who will talk to him at the party, and how other people will see him.

What is a sad ghost? Sam is drawn with a white sheet over himself, and readers can’t see his face. They can only experience his thoughts, and his anxiety, and that’s where they will be able to relate to him.

I’d also like to note that the names of the main characters — Sam and Socks — could really be female too.

Especially, when he meets a fellow ghost in Socks at the party.

… hands up if you can relate to that

The comic is at heart, pretty straightforward, but that’s where it works .

I’ve never been comfortable at parties, and god knows, I’ve had times when my thoughts have gotten out of control, and I can’t shut them down. I’ve never really acknowledged to myself just how intense they can get until I started getting help for them these last couple of years.

I can control them better (though they can get the best of me from time to time). And that’s what at the heart of this — that Sam isn’t alone, that he finds Socks, another Sad Ghost just like him at the party.

Together they leave the party, and find out just how similar they can be. I love love LOVE that in a busy party, with all the popular people dancing and having fun that Sam finds someone just like him.

… and that’s how they start The Sad Ghost Club.

What is The Sad Ghost Club exactly?

Lize Meddings created The Sad Ghost Club, and from a small beginning it’s become a project to spread positive awareness of mental health. The aim of the group is to remind people that they are not alone in an effort to help make dealing with mental health issues easier.

There’s power in knowing that you’re not alone, and that’s what this book reminds people.
