#5Books: Book recs and the delight of a new, old show

I adore The Closer. I mean, adore.

It’s season 1, so I may have to wait forever until the other seasons are released, but for now I am enjoying Brenda coming to LA and making her mark on Priority Homicide.

By Friday, I went through all 13 episodes, and was reminded of just how neurotic and messy and intelligent Brenda was. She is essentially surrounded by men in this show, and sort of charms and bosses them around while showing them exactly why she should be their boss. Kyra Sedgewick is just so perfect in it — and oh God, why doesn’t this show come back for a revival? Everything else is!

I also think she is one of the more complex female characters on TV in a long time, with Sharon Raydor, her replacement on Major Crimes, second for me (which do not get me started on the ending of that show).

Sighs. Old shows, strong women = good times!

How is everyone doing? How was your week last week?

And here are some of the titles I’m waiting on this week.

The Mistake

Can one decision change everything?

I couldn’t believe that Bec would, after all these years, bring the whole thing up so…casually.

Bec and Kate are sisters, but they couldn’t be less alike. Bec lives the domestic dream with her surgeon husband Stuart and three perfect children. So why is she so attracted to free-spirited Ryan? Kate’s life is hardly a dream. But when she meets Adam – tall, kind, funny – things start looking up. Until she finds out he’s been keeping secrets from her.

Then there is the incident both sisters are desperate to ignore…

Will they discover that some mistakes can’t be put right?

For fans of Liane Moriarty and Marian Keyes comes a tantalising, suspenseful read that will have you addictively turning the pages …

It’s the idea that two so very different sisters are emotionally kind of the same that intrigues me, and I hope means for some excellent characterisation. I’m also curious about this incident they’re so desperate ignore — is that what’s driving them to these two different men?

Before She Disappeared

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Lisa Gardner, a propulsive thriller featuring an ordinary woman who will stop at nothing to find the missing people that the rest of the world has forgotten

Frankie Elkin is an average middle-aged woman, a recovering alcoholic with more regrets than belongings. But she spends her life doing what no one else will–searching for missing people the world has stopped looking for. When the police have given up, when the public no longer remembers, when the media has never paid attention, Frankie starts looking.

A new case brings her to Mattapan, a Boston neighborhood with a rough reputation. She is searching for Angelique Badeau, a Haitian teenager who vanished from her high school months earlier. Resistance from the Boston PD and the victim’s wary family tells Frankie she’s on her own–and she soon learns she’s asking questions someone doesn’t want answered. But Frankie will stop at nothing to discover the truth, even if it means the next person to go missing could be her.

Lisa Gardner is one of those authors that by all accounts I should adore, but I haven’t yet found a title of hers that I enjoyed. And I really really want to! Fingers crosses that Frankie is it for me.

The Damage

When a small-town family is pushed to the brink, how far will they go to protect one of their own? An edgy, propulsive read about what we will do in the name of love and blood

Tony has always looked out for his younger brother, Nick. So when he’s called to a hospital bed where Nick is lying battered and bruised after a violent sexual assault, his protective instincts flare, and a white-hot rage begins to build.

As a small-town New England lawyer, Tony’s wife, Julia, has cases involving kids all the time. When Detective Rice gets assigned to this one, Julia feels they’re in good hands. Especially because she senses that Rice, too, understands how things can quickly get complicated. Very complicated.

After all, one moment Nick was having a drink with a handsome stranger; the next, he was at the center of an investigation threatening to tear not only him, but his entire family, apart. And now his attacker, out on bail, is disputing Nick’s version of what happened.

As Julia tries to help her brother-in-law, she sees Tony’s desire for revenge, to fix things for Nick, getting out of control. Tony is starting to scare her. And before long, she finds herself asking: does she really know what her husband is capable of? Or of what she herself is?

Exploring elements of doubt, tragedy, suspense, and justice, The Damage is an all-consuming read that marks the explosive debut of an extraordinary new writer.

Everything happening here, around these three characters just has me on pins and needles to get my hands on it. Julia, especially, who discovers just what she is capable of — what does that mean??

Exit

he sensational new crime novel from the bestselling author of SNAP

… is anyone else getting Single White Female vibes from this? No wait, THE UNDOING! I actually forgot i watched that: I am getting Elena vibes from this (Rachel) . (Did anyone else watch it?)

Also, was anyone else a bit surprised at the full frontal female nudity? Because yes, that was a bit unexpected. Not to mention, the almost-storyline of Elena and Grace being interested in each other romantically — because I swear it was there, before someone decided to pull it. Ah, and the cherry on top? Hugh Grant does sleazy VERY WELL!

The Closer really was such a great show. I watched it for many years. A pregnant single white female is an interesting twist on the trope.
