Top Ten Tuesday: The last 10 books I abandoned for whatever reason

If you’re new to my blog, welcome to Top Ten Tuesday. It’s held over at That Artsy Reader Girl, where every week bloggers list their top 10 bookish lists to the theme for the week. This week’s topic is about those books I’ve abandoned for whatever reason — whether it’s a DNF, or it just slipped down my TBR.

All We Ever Wanted by Emily Giffin: I am never going near any of this woman’s books. The level of hate aimed at Meghan Markle just blew my mind — on Archie’s birthday no less, and about a video released to raise money for charity.

Tell the Truth, Shame the Devil: I feel abandoned by this book because it’s so GOOD, and it’s a standalone *cries*

Strange Practice: I read the first and was was eager for the second, and I realise while doing this TTT, I didn’t even know if there was a third out. I guess, the second disappointed me in some respects, so it’s slipped down my TBR.

Books in verse: Granted, I’ve read only one, and it is a powerful read, but it’s not a format that ever spoke to me.  I feel like there’s too much left unsaid. I dunno — what’s a book in verse that converted you to the genre/ format?

Wolf by Wolf: this was undoubtedly a glorious read, but it came to me at a stage where I was still only dipping my toes back into the genre (and still am to an extent). So it really was me, and not the book at all.

Incryptid: As I recall, I adored this series, and in particular Verity — and the book after this involves her brother, and I wasn’t disappointed because Verity was one of those characters that made me laugh out loud, and I treasure characters like that.

Mortal Gods: I think after the disappointment of this book cured me of the search for anything to do with the Greek gods in a contemporary setting. It killed that curiousity dead, it was so bad.

American Gods: Dear Lord, did I try to read this book. Nope. I read his other work and loved it, but this was beyond me.

That’s it! Are any of these on your list?

I liked the first InCryptid book but for whatever reason I’ve never read any of the sequels!

  • Lydia says:

I struggle with books in verse, too, and hope you get some good recommendations for that format.

  • Tammy @ Books, Bones & Buffy says:

I read Strange Practice too but never felt compelled to read the rest of the series. And wow, those Emily Griffin tweets!

    • Verushka says:

That happens to me too — with Strange Practice, I really did take the disappointment of book 2 to heart lol And Emily Giffin blew my mind, she really did. I mean, I get if someone doesn’t like Meghan, but it was mean and petty in so many ways, and it really didn’t sit well with me.

  • Dini @ dinipandareads says:

Oh no, sorry to hear that American Gods was such a big nope for you lol it was my second Gaiman book and I was surprised by how much I loved it considering how bizarre it is 😂

    • Verushka says:

The bizarreness was just too much for me, I think. I might give it another go to see if time has changed my perspective o this.

  • Becca @ H & B Hit the Books says:

Wow I hadn’t seen the comments about Megan but those are really harsh. I had little interest in her books before but now probably won’t bother.

    • Verushka says:

Very harsh and very petty, and just mean. I still can’t figure why she thought screencapping her messages and posting it was a good thing to do.

  • Kimberly @ Caffeinated Reviewer says:

I love the InCryptid series and listen to them on audio. I hope you revisit. I also loved Wolf by Wolf, again on audio.

    • Verushka says:

I think I should try them on audio — the books themselves were so funny, I imagine listening to them would be a treat!

  • Mir @FangirlPixieBlog says:

I want to read American Gods and am sorry you didn’t like as much as you wanted to

    • Verushka says:

This was the first book of Gaiman’s that came onto my radar, and I very much wanted to like it, but even though this one didn’t work out, it finally get me exploring his other work like Neverwhere, which I adore.

  • Christine @ Captivated Reading says:

I haven’t read any of these, but I’ve heard of most of them! 🙂 I’m really curious about the InCryptid series. 🙂 Sorry you weren’t able to finish these!

    • Verushka says:

The Incryptid series was genuinely a fun series to read — I just adored Verity and didn’t want to let her go!

  • Louise @ Monstrumology says:

I haven’t read any books that are told in verse but I’m not interested in trying them because I know that I’ll struggle with the format.

    • Verushka says:

I am torn about them — it’s a bit like magical realism — I want to figure out the genre, but I am going to need the right book to do make it work.

  • Lark says:

Haven’t read any of these. But I had fun reading your reasons for ‘abandoning’ them. 🙂

  • Anne@HeadFullofBooks says:

I’ve attempted American Gods a few times, too. I guess I’ll just be satified with Gaiman’s shorter books. Books I’ve Abandoned

  • Deanna @ A Novel Glimpse says:

That Whole MM/EG thing sucks. I’m sorry it made you have to DNF.

  • Angela says:

I’ll be honest, Emily Giffin is one of my favorite authors! I saw her rant about Meghan Markle and the Archie birthday video, and I can’t say I disagreed with the whole thing! Some of it was a bit picky and OTT. I’ve been following EG for awhile, though, so I know her love for the royals and how her feelings about MM have evolved over the years.

  • Michael says:

American Gods has come up on a number of these lists – a marmite book perhaps, you love it or hate it (I loved it lol).

    My TTT is here https://bookloverssanctuary.com/2020/05/12/top-ten-tuesday-the-last-ten-books-i-abandoned/

  • Sam@wlabb says:

I have not read any of these, but I usually like a good book in verse, here or there. There are a few authors I have had great success with.

  • Brooke Lorren says:

I haven’t read any of these. I’m not sure I’d want to read a book in verse. I’m not a big fan of poetry, although there are some poems I think are really awesome, like Annabelle Lee and The Gods of the Copybook Headings. Those are mostly older though.

  • Lectrice Vorace says:

I didn’t have interest in Emily Giffin’s books to begin with, but I will definitely not be going near any of her books after the hateful and unwarranted comments she made about Meghan Markle. I’m not sure why she feels the need to bully another woman. If you don’t have anything nice to say on social media, don’t say anything at all!

Great list, by the way! 🙂 Here’s my TTT list.

  • Suzanne @ The Bookish Libra says:

I hadn’t heard about the Emily Giffin drama. That really does sound like in poor taste on her part though.

American Gods made my DNF list this week too. I don’t know what it is about that book but I’ve tried twice and just give up, lol.
