I can’t tell you how excited I am that Buffy is actually on a streaming channel over here. It’s one of the iconic shows that defines the noughties for me, but getting shows like this (and the X-files, for instance) seems like an impossibility over here. I mean Australian TV stations never really knew what to do with the show, and often stuck it at ridiculous hours for those of us who had to get up early the next day.
And also, it’s sort of comforting to see her and the Scoobies on my screen again! The nostalgia is strong with me this week!
Stay Mad, Sweetheart
THERE’S A FINE LINE BETWEEN INNOCENCE AND GUILT. AN EVEN FINER LINE BETWEEN JUSTICE AND REVENGE.
Data scientist Laura prefers the company of her books to the real world – let alone that cesspit online. But when her best friend Emily becomes the victim of horrific cyberbullying, she makes it her all-engulfing mission to track down the worst culprits.
Petite corporate financier Suki is about to outshine the stupid boys at her firm: she’s leading the acquisition of Edinburgh’s most exciting start-up. If only she could get its brilliant, but distracted, co-founder Laura to engage.
Event planner Claire is left to salvage the start-up’s annual conference after her colleague Emily fails to return to work. She’s determined to get a promotion out of it, but her boss isn’t playing ball.
As the women’s paths intertwine, the insidious discrimination they each face comes to light. Emboldened by Emily’s tragic experience, they join forces to plot the downfall of all those who’ve wronged them.
But with emotions running high, will the punishments fit the crimes?
A pacy and suspenseful novel with its feet firmly in the #MeToo era. 9 to 5 meets Suits with a dash of Black Mirror.
That’s an electric title that sparked my imagination right away, and the blurb is not what I expected at all – I want to see how these women come together for Emily and what do they do? On the one hand, I am looking forward to seeing what these women cook up, but also? I want to see how the author makes these women and their quest for revenge make sense.
Marked for Death
A thrilling follow-up to one of 2018’s hottest debuts, Killer Intent
When London’s legal establishment is shaken to its foundation by the grisly crucifixion of a retired Lord Chief Justice, Detective Chief Inspector Joelle Levy is tasked with finding his killer. With fifty years of potential enemies to choose from, only the identical murder of former solicitor Adam Blunt offers a ray of hope: what is it that connects these victims who met such a gruesome end?
Assigned to the story from the start, news reporter Sarah Truman sets out to investigate on her own, not suspecting that the trail will lead straight back to her own front door and her fiancé Michael Devlin. A criminal barrister determined to prove the innocence of his own client, Michael is at first oblivious to the return of the murderous figure from his past – until tragedy strikes closer to home.
Struggling with his grief and guilt, and now caught up in a madman’s terrible quest for revenge, Michael must race to bring the killer to justice – before it’s too late.
This blurb intrigues me — this is a series that actually focused on three main characters, two of whom are mentioned in the blurb. Having three MCs can work really well or fail really badly, and I hope Kent pulls this all together, because these characters are so damned interesting. And not to mention, how does everything come back to Michael? \
The Boy from the Woods
The brilliant new thriller from the international bestselling author, described by Dan Brown as ‘the modern master of the hook and twist.’
Thirty years ago, a child was found in the woods. He had been living a feral existence, with no memory of how he got there or even who he is. Everyone just calls him Wilde.
Now another child has gone missing – Naomi Pine – who may be playing some sort of disappearing game. No one seems concerned about her whereabouts, not even her father.
No one – except criminal attorney Hester Crimstein, whose grandson knows Naomi is being bullied badly at school and is concerned for her safety. Hester is determined to find Naomi so she calls Wilde – now ex-military and an expert in security issues – and asks him to track her down.
But even Wilde can’t find Naomi. One day passes, then another, then a third.
Four days later a finger shows up in the mail.
And Wilde knows that what may have started as a game has now spiralled into something far, far darker…
The last Coben book I read didn’t impress me a whole lot, but he is one of those authors I am willing to give some leeway too. It might come back to bite me in the ass, but I’m going to try!
Death and Deception
If you like gritty action, snarky humor, and unique magic, then GRAB E.A. Copen’s exciting urban fantasy series, The Lazarus Codex.
This collection contains the first five books of the popular Lazarus Codex series from preternatural storyteller E.A. Copen
An ex-con who talks with the dead. A bloody murder.
Figures they’d blame the guy with the record.
For Lazarus Kerrigan, The Big Easy is anything but easy.
Crime is up, incomes are down, and now his front door is a murder scene.
Talk about a bad morning.
Since Lazarus is the only ex-con around, the cops are ready to pin it all on him and call it a day.
If he wants to clear his name, Lazarus will have to find the murderer. Fast.
You’d think that’d be easy considering he can talk to the dead.
But more than monsters go bump in the night when the sun sets in New Orleans. The infamous Baron Samedi is back in town, and ready to offer Laz a new power he can’t refuse.
At least, not if he wants to get out of this one alive!
READY TO BE SPELLBOUND?
So, this collection was released a couple of months ago, but I’m putting it on here bc my mother and sister just got back from a trip to New Orelans and adored it! In the case of the book, throwing in some paranormal mysteries and the fact that Lazarus can talk to the dead, has me hooked!
So awesome that Buffy is on a streaming channel over there! It will always be one of my favorite shows ever. I remember like 12 years ago or so it was on tv here but since then it’s never been back. I have a dvd box of it and Angel so it’s not a problem but it would be nice to see it on tv again. Such nostalgia indeed!
I remember taping the show on VHS tapes, would you believe. It was on late at night here when it first aired, and then the channel tended not to show things in proper order. I never ended up getting the box sets for some reason, but now I’m happy about that 🙂 Spike just arrived too — he and Angel were hands down my favourites.
Streaming services are the best! It stinks that there are so many of them, but the viewing possibilities are practically endless!
They are! Disney just arrived over here, but all I like on it is …. the Mandalorian I guess is one i would like to see. But i’m in no rush to go get it for one series. I’m loving that Buffy and Highlander appeared on another streaming channel/
There you go, adding to my list again. Can you believe I’ve never watched Buffy? (I know, the horror!)
YAY and … Barb. Barb. Barb. How have you *not* watched Buffy?!?!
Thanks for sharing! And I’m glad you got Buffy on a streaming service. 🙂
-Lauren
That show is still so much fun!
I’m a little jealous about Buffy. I love that show! These are some great recommendations!
ME TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Even the earlier ones are so watchable!
Death and Deception does sound like a fun read. And I LOVE Buffy! It was such a great show. I watched the Thanksgiving episode over Thanksgiving and it sill totally made me laugh. 🙂
IT WASSSSS!!! I was just saying above that earlier episodes are so watchable when usually in shows like this, they tend to show their age, but no, still watchable and minimal cringing lol
I was already intrigued that Stay Mad featured a data scientist, but then it was described as 9 to 5 meets Suits and THAT has me wanting to know a lot more about the book
I know! Suits and 9 to 5 together in a blurb is something I never thought I’d see!
I just finished reading Slayer, which is a Buffy retelling, but have actually never watched an episode of the show. I loved the book though so now I really want to go back and watch the show at some point.
You should Suzanne! Am betting (hoping) it will put stuff in the book in a different light.
