The Institute of Fantastical Inventions: Book Launch

It was actually a wonderfully warm afternoon when I headed out to The Children’s Bookshop  to see Dave Leys and illustrator Shane Ogilvie launch The Institute of Fantastical Inventions!  (IFI)

Author Dave Leys and Shane Ogilvie

Dave is a teacher, and Read3r’z Re-Vu member, who thinks himself an artist as he likes explain that he took his own designs for a meeting with Harbour Publishing and Gary promptly told him to stick with writing, and hired Shane instead! But the two meshed wonderfully, as it turns out because both said what a pleasure and how easy it was to work on this book.

Dave described writing the book as quick, fun and such a fluid process, because he wrote in every spare moment he had, and everything just flowed out of him. He wanted to write a book celebrating ideas and imagination, and as he considers science magical, combining all of that to write a book about how people fulfilled their fantasies with science.

His aim, he said, was to write something new about fantasy, and since science is something akin to magic for him, he combined them.

Full House at The Children’s Bookshop for the launch of The Institute of Fantastical Inventions!

He described Shane’s illustrations as capturing the spirit of the book, which from the cover looks like they’re a whole lot of fun! In addition, Shane added that his art just flowed out of him when he began working on the book — and this made me laugh, he had to use Google to figure out what some of the things Dave described were!

So, please add this to your middle-graders reading list, or just read it yourself! (book review coming soon too!)
