Tales of Terror from the Black Ship: #CBCA Review

Tales of Teror from the Black ship: #CBCA Review

What is this about?: Ethan and Cathy are sibling waiting for the arrival of their father with the doctor when Thackeray, a sailor in search of refuge from a storm comes knocking. What follows is a collection of spooking tales as a sort of payment for his refuge.

What else is this about?:Β This is an atmospheric book, and there’s even a sting in the tale that will surprise you. But, it is at its heart a short story collection of spooky stories more than a book about Cathy and Ethan.

  • Lovely review! I’m glad you enjoyed the atmosphere of the book and the illustrations sound great. πŸ™‚

TY! The author/illustrator actually did make the atmosphere work so well with this! And wuss that I am, I can finally say I enjoyed a horror book!

  • Awesome review! I just went and commented on the full one πŸ™‚

  • Silvia says:

Sounds interesting! I’m up for spooky stories and I honestly like when there are illustrations as well πŸ™‚ However, I read the full review and I get your point. Too bad about the connection with the characters, but good thing about getting the atmosphere right.

    • Verushka says:

I think, if the author gets the atmosphere right in a book like this, it’s important enough that I didn’t mind the lack of connection. I think doing right by the characters would have made the book better, but overall it is a pretty decent read.

I’ve got another of the authors books on my shelf that I haven’t gotten around to reading yet, but it sounds like a lost opportunity. It would have been a much better read as a series of short stories but sounds as though it tried to do a little too much and ended up disconnection. Wonderful review Verushka and commented on the full review <3

    • Verushka says:

Kelly, TY for commenting there! Also, I would love to know what you think of his other book! I think he’s got a Tales of Terror series of books like this, and this one at least was a lost opportunity, but hopefully the others are better.

  • Great review! This one sounds interesting and although you have said that it didn’t work so well, I’m still keen to see how they managed to tie in the short stories with Thackeray the story teller. I also want to know what the twist is! πŸ˜‰

I’m glad you enjoyed the short stories themselves and that the illustrations were good and the spooky atmosphere was there. All in all it sounds like a decent one.

    • Verushka says:

Thank you Di! And thank you for commenting there! The book was a great collection of short stories and it absolutely nails the atmosphere. I think it would have been better if the large ploit had been connected better to the stories, but it’s like you said pretty decent.
