Having read Who’s Afraid? earlier this year, I was impressed and pretty much hooked on urban fantasy author Maria Lewis as a new voice in Australian urban fantasy. And then she says she wants to write a crime novel — my other favourite genre!
Here’s the thing you have to understand about urban fantasy author Maria Lewis is that she started her journalism career covering police rounds in her teens for 10 years. So, she’s definitely got the experience to deliver a crime novel. Add to that her work at The Daily Telegraph, where she focused on film and entertainment — anyone thinking of a crime novel involving Australian film and entertainment? Throw in work for the New York Post, Empire Magazine, WHO Weekly, Huffington Post and more.
One of the best things about her is seeing her cons around Australia, sharing everything she’s learned with her fans and those of us that are pretty much book nerds! So if she’s coming around to your city? Go see her!
that’s kind of awesome that she used her own experience to write what she is passionate about!
IKR? And Who’s Afraid is so good, I really hope she does a crime novel!
Sounds like she has some great experience to write a crime thriller! I do love mysteries and suspenseful novels.
I’m so addicted right now, am not even going to pretend otherwise lol
Gosh, I can’t think of anyone probably more suited to writing a crime novel. I can’t even imagine the horrible events she’s had to report, but I’d love to see it turned into a fictional storyline. It always makes the narrative feel more genuine when authors have gone through experiences, even just reporting from the sidelines. I haven’t read Who’s Afraid as yet, but will now be pushing it up my TBR. Great post Verushka, really enjoyed it <3
I was thinking about that too! I know her focus right now is the Who’s Afraid? world, but I am ever hopeful. I’m actually hopeful of a combination of both — crime and urban fantasy!
I love when true crime/investigative journalists start writing fiction! It always feels so real!
I JUST found out she’s actually writing it too!
