Female. Professional. Wrestling. In the 1950s to boot. Come on, surely that’s got you curious? Recently, thanks to The Body Reader and Memory Man, I’ve become interested in characters with quirks, for want of a better word, like a photographic memory. The Body Reader sucked, while the Memory Man was better so I am very curious about this the second book rec today. This next book rec is… woah. I don’t know what to make of it. Is the main character a killer? Or a teen in some serious trouble? Then there’s the story of a woman who falls in love, and pretty much destroys her marriage and her life. Yeah, this one is going to hurt, isn’t it?
And last, I’m not sure about at all, so I’d be grateful for an opinion: should I give this author another chance if this happened with her first book I read?
The Sweetheart: Is the highly original and unexpected story of Leonie, who decides she wants more than waitressing and marriage and that just happens to be wrestling. AND she’s good at it! I was reading this review that made me fall in love with it, especially the journey towards confidence, and the realisation that she doesn’t have to be married and settled down with a husband that tells her what to do <—- ALL of that goodness and professional wrestling. SOLD.
Nightwatch: Ok, this is book 4, but I am intrigued despite my fear that this is a series that needs to be read from the beginning. I know, I know, but it’s the Memory Man/The Body Reader effect: Kendra was born blind, and because of the developed her other senses to the point that she’s a much-in-demand investigator. But then she gets her sight back — and has to help the surgeon that gave her back her sight. But more than anything I want to believe this whole heightened senses/physical trope thing can work in the hands of the right author.
The Female of the Species: Amy is violent and knows she is. It stems from the death of her sister, and her killer who walked free. Then there’s Jack who feels guilty about his role in her sister’s death — but did he kill her? Is that why he’s so obsessed with Amy? And then there’s Peekay who waltzes into Amy’s life and earns her protection — but why? and then what happens at a party that changes everything? See tons of questions and a blurb that doesn’t give enough answers. About the quickest way to pique my interest lol!
Love at first flight: I feel like this is such a whimsical title for a book that delves into the pain of a family that is breaking apart because Mel found true love — and not with her husband. The blurb promises it’s going to turn your expectations of true love on its head — bring it on I say!
The Woman in Cabin 10: Is Ruth Ware’s newest. And yes, I might be one of the few people on earth who didn’t quite get into A dark Dark Wood from the sounds of things. But I can’t help myself or I am a glutton for punishment: is it me? Or is it her writing? Or both? Should I give this one a chance? I mean, already it’s on a boat, which reminds me a lot of a cabin in the middle of nowhere… I’m just sayin’
What grabs your attention this week?
The Female of the Species sounds really interesting!
IKR? And I love the cover too!
I think The Female of the Species sounds so good! Thanks for sharing all of these.
It certainly is sticking in my mind too! It asks all the right questions in the blurb, you know?
Oh I just recently read about both The Woman in Cabin 10 and The Female of the Species and requested both so yay!
Hee, great minds 🙂 I’ hope Cabin 10 is better than in a dark dark wood — that one just didn’t sit right with me. Female of the Species has me so curious too — that blurb has hit all the right notes with me!
