First book rec this week, I have to admit I liked just because of the very epic title. Srsly. It’s a historical novel, involving a London society of psychics. So cool! Next is a book rec on office culture and female friendships turned up to the 11th degree. It sounds hilarious, but it’s more than that. There’s also book 3 in a series, in two years mind you, and it pits a female DI against a man who is something like a leader of a cult. The fourth book rec asks, in part at least: what happens when the memory of a violent assault is removed? It’s less a commentary on society and sexual assault and more a Stepford Wives-like psychological thriller. And last, Anna Kendrick: her book has a release date!
The Somnambulist and the Psychic Thief: Consulting detectives are all the rage, but this one is a little out of the ordinary, wonderfully so. Miss Lane is a former friend to a psychic, who as it turns out was a bit of a fraud. Dejected, she leaves and starts working for Jasper Jesperson, a consulting detective. Then THE case happens: the one with the somnambulist and the missing mediums. It sounds insane and all sorts of brilliant — and how does a cat in a tree figure into everything??
Break in Case of Emergency: Satire seems to be the best way to describe this and I feel like it should be said: office culture. Is there an office culture that doesn’t drive anyone nuts? Anyway, Jen works for a feminist start-up chaired by a celebrity. However, instead of empowering women there’s mostly undermining going on, stroking their celebrity chair’s ego and just being generally absurd. What I like about this is it’s not going to pull punches when it comes to Jen, her family and surviving her office.
Tastes like Fear (DI Marnie #3): In the space of two years, author Sarah Hilary has written 3 books in this series, and here I am staring at the Goodreads listing wondering how the hell I missed this? The blurb is suitably vague on the two girls that start this case for Marnie, but what is clear is that these women bring Marnie face to face with Harm, the leader of a family: which consists of girls who are in need of a home. I feel like in place of family, I should read cult.
All is Not Forgotten: Jenny lives in a picture perfect community, and one night she’s assaulted. Then somehow she’s given a drug to wipe her memory of the assault. But the emotional memory is a different story, and starts to affect her memory: her mother wants to pretend it don’t affect her life in her country club and community; her father becomes obsessed with justice. All of this comes to together to expose their community — see Stepford Wives — and what happened to Jenny. It’s less a commentary on social attitudes and sexual assault and more a psychological thriller, but it’s compelling still.
Scrappy Little Nobody: Anna Kendrick’s Twitter and Instagram are pretty much the most entertaining things ever, and I can’t imagine her book being any different! The blurb says it’s going to be about her life and her time in Hollywood and given her wicked sense of humour, I can’t WAIT! Oh yes and the release date: November this year.
What are you looking forward to in this list?
The Anna Kendrick one looks great!! I love her and can’t wait to read that one. 😀
Doesn’t it? She’s SO funny, and amazing, I have such high hopes for this!
The first two sound really intriguing, and I hadn’t heard of either before, so thanks for sharing! I did recently hear about Anna Kendrick’s book. Well, I knew she was writing one…but I LOVE the title and I’m so pumped it comes out this year!

The first two are so different but when I read both I liked them both, which is really weird for me!
Oooh haven’t read any of these and now I want to read all of them! Break In Case of Emergency particularly intrigues me!!
Oh IA, Break in Case of Emergency does sound particularly good doesn’t it? Office culture seems perfect for a book like this. God know, we’d all have plenty to say — and probably agree with in this book.
