WOW: The Conclave of Shadow, 1 & 2

Waiting on Wednesday- What are book bloggers looking forward to reading next-

Waiting on Wednesday is held over at Breaking the Spine every week, and every week you get the chance to see what new releases bloggers are looking forward to. This week I chose:

WOW Book rec: The Conclave of Shadow by Alyc Helms

Technically, this is book 2 of the Missy Masters series, but really, go check out book 1 anyway. This series is about Missy who inherits the powers of her estranged, superhero grandfather Mr Mystic.

In Book 1, she heads to China to find her grandfather’s mentor and get some training, but once there she gets involved in the trainer’s, Lung Huang’s, family politics and the next thing she knows she has to save China. How’s that for the first day on the job?\

Blurb for book 1: Missy Masters inherited more than the usual genetic cocktail from her estranged grandfather. She also got his preternatural control of shadows and his enduring legacy as the legendary vigilante superhero, Mr. Mystic.

After a little work, the costume fits OK, but Missy is far from experienced at fighting crime, so she journeys to China to seek the aid of Lung Huang, the ancient master who once guided her grandfather. She becomes embroiled in the politics of Lung Huang and his siblings, the allegedly mythical nine dragon-guardians of all creation.

When Lung Di—Lung Huang’s brother and mortal enemy—raises a magical barrier that cuts off China from the rest of the world, it falls to the new Mr. Mystic to prove herself by taking down the barrier.

It’s a superhero novel, a pulp fantasy novel, with lashings of kung fu, immense kick-ass dragons and an unfailingly sympathetic heroine—yes, it’s another wonderful Angry Robot title.

In The Conclave of Shadow  (out in July this year), a friend of hers asks for her help to find an ancient artifact, and that’s when she travels realms to the source of her power.

Blurb for book 2: In the sequel to The Dragons of Heaven,Missy Masters teams up with her friend and fellow Argent Ace, Abby Trent, to retrieve a stolen magical artifact, taking them into the realm of the Djinn and to the shadow realm which is the source of Missy’s powers.

I absolutely love that it’s a grand-daughter following in her grandfather’s footsteps and, from the looks of it costume and all. Does anyone remember The Shadow with Alec Baldwin? That’s who Mr Mystic reminds me of.
