WOW: Certain Dark Things

Waiting on Wednesday is a book meme held over at Breaking the Spine where book bloggers highlight the books they’re looking forward to. This week I’m looking forward to: Certain Dark Things by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Book rec: Certain Dark Things by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

First up, gorgeous cover is gorgeous. Nods. Second, it’s Latin America mythology and vampires. It’s got me excited about vampires again lol!

Here’s the blurb: Critically-acclaimed novelist, Silvia Moreno-Gracia, delivers a pulse-pounding and action-packed contemporary fantasy that turns vampire fiction on its head, and features a female, Aztec blood drinker on the run from a rival narco family.

Certain Dark Things is a smart, accessible novel which combines elements of Latin American mythology with a literary voice that leads readers on an exhilarating and fast-paced journey.

Welcome to Mexico City, an oasis in a sea of vampires. Here in the city, heavily policed to keep the undead at bay, Domingo is another trash-picking street kid, just hoping to make enough to survive. Then he meets Atl, the descendant of Aztec blood drinkers. She is smart, beautiful, and dangerous. She’s also a member of a narco family and is on the run from a rival faction. Domingo is smitten. He clings to her like a barnacle until Atl relents and decides to let him stick around. After a while, it seems as if she may even like him back.

But Atl’s problems, Nick and Rodrigo, have come to find her. When they start to raise the body count in the city, it attracts the attention of police officers, local crime bosses, and the vampire community. Atl has to get out before Mexico City is upended, and her with it. For Domingo, this could mean a daring escape over a trash-encrusted wasteland to try to get to Guatemala–if he can make it out alive.

What do you think of it? What are you waiting on this week?

Latin American vampires? Sign me up! It’s been a long time since I’ve been excited about a vampire novel, but since Moreno-Garcia strayed off the beaten paranormal path I feel it deserves a chance. Great post!
