Todd Alexander: on drawing from reality in your writing

As much as you don’t want to get sued if you piss someone off by using them in your book, reality really is the best fodder for writing, right? Granted, you’d probably want to vary your characters slightly from reality…

What We Saw, which I reviewed recently, is based on the ugly reality of the Steubenville rape case, but there it acknowledges the reality on which it is based. That said, Todd is talking about some infinitely more personal here though, and that can be dangerous too: consider this Norwegian author who pissed his family off so much they don’t talk to him any more. But his book was a raging success.

Which of your favourite authors have drawn from their reality for their writing?
