WOW: The Gap of Time: Modern Shakespeare

Waiting on Wednesday

“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.

This week’s pre-publication “can’t-wait-to-read” selection is: The Gap of Time by Jeanette WintersonHogarth Shakespeare Project
Blurb: The Winter’s Tale is one of Shakespeare’s “late plays.” It tells the story of a king whose jealousy results in the banishment of his baby daughter and the death of his beautiful wife. His daughter is found and brought up by a shepherd on the Bohemian coast, but through a series of extraordinary events, father and daughter, and eventually mother too, are reunited.

In The Gap of Time, Jeanette Winterson’s cover version of The Winter’s Tale, we move from London, a city reeling after the 2008 financial crisis, to a storm-ravaged American city called New Bohemia. Her story is one of childhood friendship, money, status, technology and the elliptical nature of time. Written with energy and wit, this is a story of the consuming power of jealousy on the one hand, and redemption and the enduring love of a lost child on the other.

Yup, it’s Shakespeare in a novel! And I’m increasingly excited by the other novelists associated with this project like Jo Nesbo (Macbeth) and Gillian Flynn (Hamlet). Their novels are out next year. But much like the Jane Austen Project, I am EXCITED! I know Shakespeare isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but I hope that because it’s in novel form, more readers give his stories a go. Anything to get people interested in a good thing, IMO.

Interesting concept. I’m not familiar with this story but the whole time concept has me intrigued.

Me too! This isn’t a very familiar tale to me either, but there are others coming up that I do know and that I keep wondering about. I am excited about these!

This sounds so cool! I love Shakespeare though I haven’t read Winter’s Tale yet. The fact that there are two other authors also invoked makes it even cooler!

    • Verushka says:

It does right? I’m all excited about Shakespeare again YAY!!

(Just please don’t anyone do Romeo and Juliet — the story is wonderful but it’s so had its time and i’m tired of it :(

Gillian Flynn is doing a different version of Hamlet?! Awesome! I like the sound of these books, as I’m a big Shakespeare fan.

P.S. As for your comment about entering the Goodreads giveaways – the links I shared go to the books’ Goodreads page but if you scroll down, it should have a way to enter the giveaway if it’s open to you!

This got me excited about seeing her name on something — I’ve felt like she’s been everywhere and it’s been of an overload of her, so I’ve avoided her books. But, this project made me go ohhhhh, I need to see what I’m missing out on!

(And thank you — I suck at ALL THINGS GOODREADs)
